Chris Naughton PhD, MA(Hons), PGCE, ABSM, LRAM
I began learning piano at aged eight gaining entry to Adele Franklin’s studio in London. I then studied piano and Alexander method with Peter O’Hagan before I attended the City of Birmingham University Conservatoire. At Birmingham, I studied piano with Joseph Weingarten, and harpsichord with George Miles. After graduation, I continued my studies with Alexander Kelly and Georgina Zellan-Smith at the Royal Academy of Music. I later studied advanced jazz piano with Simon Purcell.
I have worked in music education as both a piano teacher and university lecturer in the UK and Australasia. I have also taught at early childhood level.
Currently, I teach piano to students of all ages, in person or online, at my studio in Mt. Eden Auckland. I am qualified to teach ABRSM theory and support students undertaking NCEA levels 1,2 and 3.
In addition to teaching, I put my skills to practical use and have worked professionally as a pianist, accompanist and conductor. I currently perform with the jazz duo/quartet Standard Deviation.
I have composed a number of musicals for upper primary school level. The titles include: Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Snow White and Aladdin. I have also written a song cycle for voice entitled Songs of Innocence and Experience, Songs for Kate, Sonatine for Piano and a Sonata for Three Tubas in addition to many songs, carols and incidental music for the classroom.
I have written for film, including the score for ‘Fragments,’ directed by Iain Faulkner and premiered at the Edinburgh film festival. I have written many backing track and jingles — the latest being for the Max Whitehead Radio Show.
